The recognition keeps coming for the dynamic tandem, the Philpot twins. Both 21-year-old Tyson and Jalen Philpot have been named 2021 U Sports first team all-Canadians at the receiver position. Both had remarkable seasons, earning Conference all-star recognition as well as earning Player of the Week honors during the six-game Canada West regular season.
With Jalen and Tyson being selected as first team U Sports all-Canadians at the receiver position, they become the first pair of receivers to be selected first team all-Canadians from the same team since the University of Regina Rams duo of Chris Getzlaf and Chris Bauman were first team all-Canadians in 2006.
“It is very rare to have two all-Canadian receivers from one team let alone have a set of twins,” states University of Calgary Offensive Coordinator Pat Sheahan. The last time the University of Calgary had a pair of all-Canadian receivers was 2009 when Nate Coehoorn and Anthony Parker were named to the first and second team all-Canadians respectively before going on to excellent Canadian Football League careers.
Jalen, who is seven minutes older than his twin brother, recorded 43 receptions for 799 yards in six Conference games for an average 7.2 yards per catch and an average of 133.2 per game. He recorded three touchdown receptions and was also used on special teams. Jalen was a first team all-Canadian in 2019 as well as Canada West Conference all-star. Jalen finished the year with 859 all purpose yards in Canada West, second to only his brother Tyson.
Tyson, the younger twin, recorded 41 receptions for 746 yards in six Conference games for an average of 6.8 yards per catch and an average of 124.3 per game. Tyson led the country with nine touchdown receptions and like his twin brother was also used on special teams. Tyson was named Canada West Player of the Year in 2021. This past year Tyson led Canada West in all purpose yards with 1161. He was U Sports Freshman of the Year winning the Peter Gorman Trophy in 2018.
Tyson and Jalen joined the Dinos program in 2018 after an outstanding career at Seaquam High School in Delta, BC. They made an immediate impact as freshmen and were vital parts of the 2019 Vanier Cup Championship team.
Jalen and Tyson combined for 51.6% of team’s total offense during the abbreviated six-game Canada West regular season.
“Both (Jalen and Tyson) are dynamic, explosive all-around football players. They have become great students of the game who perform at a high level. They are truly elite in the country,” states Sheahan.
Receivers coach Jabari Arthur coached the twins their entire tenure at the University of Calgary and states, “the Philpot twins are special athletes that are ultra-competitive. They compliment each other so well and get excited for each others success.”
