Ben Britton could not be happier. After not playing football with his older brother Dom for six years they are now on the same team. Both brothers are delighted to be together after spending numerous times playing pickup football games together growing up.
“We had some pretty intense games as kids,” stated the 20-year-old Britton. “I got picked on quite a bit as I was the youngest,” Ben stated who played Atom football with Dom for the Wildcats. Another older brother, Seb, played in the pickup games as well. Seb played football in Canada West for the University of Regina Rams for three years before injuries forced him to retire from competitive football.
“It has been a while since we were on the same team,” stated Ben who is beginning his third season with the Dinos, “the last time we were on the same team was in Grade 10 and he (Dom) was in Grade 12,” Ben stated.
After graduating from St. Mary’s High School in Calgary, Dom played three seasons for the Okanagan Sun in the British Columbia Football Conference leading the Sun to the Canadian Championship last season before committing to the Dinos in the off-season.
“I am definitely happy he (Dom) is here,” Ben stated who is proud of his brother’s championship season and accomplishments with the Sun. After “red-shirting” in 2021, Ben had a solid 2022 season with the Dinos hauling in 18 receptions for 239 yards and one touchdown in seven Canada West games in 2022.
The Britton family has lineage to Calgary’s football community. Their grandfather, was the late Bill Britton who played collegiately at Western University and professionally in the Canadian Football League with the Calgary Stampeders and British Columbia Lions as a fullback/defensive back. Bill played with current Dinos Head Coach Wayne Harris’s late father on the Stampeders. He remained active on the Board of the Stampeders Football Club after retiring from football. Athleticism is in their family, father Dan, was an accomplished tri-athlete.
“I know my parents are excited about having us on the same team. It will be less traveling and less expensive,” Ben stated, who is in his third year of studies earning U Sports Academic All-Canadian status in the Haskayne School of Business.
Offensive Coordinator Jabari Arthur is pleased with the progress of the 6’3”, 220 lbs. Britton. “Ben has the mindset to get better everyday and is very coachable. He is eager to learn and have challenged him to be better at the top of his routes,” Arthur stated.
Asked what it would be like to catch a touchdown pass from his brother Ben stated, “that would be pretty special when it happens.” The Dinos are hoping it comes to fruition.
Ben and the rest of the Dinos will be in action Friday evening at 6 PM (August 25) in an exhibition game at Nutrient Park against the defending Canada West Champion University of Saskatchewan Huskies.
