The University of Calgary football Dinos have four members on the 2021 Canada West all-star team that was announced Thursday. The all-star team was selected by the six Conference coaches. Calgary had three players on the offensive all-star team, one on the defensive team and none at three special team positions.
Offensive team members included Tyson and Jalen Philpot who made the receiver position and offensive center Logan Bandy, while the lone defensive player was defensive halfback Jacob Biggs.
2021 marks the second time in three years that Tyson Philpot earned all-Conference all-star recognition. The graduate of Seaquam High, in Delta, BC., led the Conference and country with nine touchdown receptions and finished the season with 41 catches for 746 yards. He was the only unanimous all-star on offense and averaged 18.2 per reception. Tyson was Canada West and U Sports Freshman of the Year in 2018.
Jalen Philpot made the all-star team for the second straight season. Jalen recorded 43 catches for 794 yards and three touchdowns. Like his twin brother, Jalen, is a graduate of Seaquam High. Jalen averaged 18.5 yards per catch. Both Philpot's are in their third year of Arts courses at the University of Calgary.
Bandy made the Conference all-star squad for the third season, but at a different position. Bandy, who attended Saskatchewan Roughriders camp in 2021 was named offensive center (tying with Saskatchewan’s Connor Bergloff) after being on the all-star team at offensive tackle in 2018 and 2019. Logan also excels in the classroom and has been a U Sports Academic all-Canadian. Bandy is a graduate of St. Francis High School in Calgary and is in his fourth year of Kinesiology studies.
Biggs makes his first appearance on the Conference all-star team. Jacob anchored a young secondary crew in 2021. He recorded 20 solo tackles, 11 assisted tackles, nine breakups and one interception in six conference games. Jacob is also a graduate of St. Francis High School and is his third year of studies in the Haskayne School of Business.
The Conference individual award winners will be announced next week prior to the Canada West Final.
