Defensive back coach Marcello Rapini feels safety Matt Lucyshyn is one of the smartest players he has ever coached during his two decades tenure as defensive back coach with the University of Calgary Dinos. “Lucy” as he is known to his teammates and coaches not only excels on the field but also in the classroom.

The 23- year-old graduate of Bishop Grandin High School is now in his fourth year of Civil Engineering studies majoring in energy and environmental studies. Because of his academic ability Matt has received numerous scholarships such as the Andy Younger Award in the Schulich School of Engineering for the past three years, as well as the football related awards such as the Dinos 5th Quarter Awards and Calgary Mohawks Football Award.

How does Lucyshyn manage to be a four-time U Sports Academic all-Canadian and succeed to balance and heavy course load with the demands of playing football?

“A lot of late nights, but time management is vital, and I always go class. When I have to a miss a class due to football, I have good friends cover for me,” states Lucyshyn, who spent the past summer working for Beck Engineering, a civil engineering firm based in Calgary.

“If you like what you do, it is easy,” added Lucyshyn who tries to be a role model for young players with is play on the field and his academic success.

Defensive secondary coach Marcello Rapini has the utmost of respect for Lucyshyn as a student and football player.

“Matt is brilliant on the field and is a field leader. He understands our schemes and our game plan thoroughly. His detailed understanding gives us a calm and steady presence,” states Rapini. He added Lucyshyn is one of the toughest players pound- for-pound he has coached but is proud of his leadership regarding academics. “His academic success acts a role model for our younger players,” Rapini added.

What advice does Lucyshyn have young players who wish to combine academic with athletic excellence?

“Going to all your classes it is the easiest way, and utilizing the academic resources the team provides such as Coach Kevin Tonak (Academic Coach with the Dinos football team). Balance is the key and learn from your mistakes,” states Lucyshyn who will graduate in December with his engineering degree but is uncertain about playing his final year of eligibility. Even if Matt does not come back to the Dinos next year, another Lucyshyn will be on the roster. Matt’s younger brother, Carter, has committed to the Dinos program for 2022.

Matt Lucyshyn personifies the word excellence on and off the field.
