October 2022 will see three individuals with roots to Dinos football being inducted into various Hall of Fames in Alberta.
Former Defensive Line coach Rick “Curly” Coleman will be inducted into the builder category at the University of Calgary Athletic Hall of Fame event on October 13 at the Palliser Hotel. Coleman is well deserving of this recognition. He was involved with the Dino football program off and on for over 50 years in a wide spectrum of areas. He was defensive line coach for 24 years (not consecutively) with Head Coaches, Mike Lashuk, Peter Connellan, and Tony Fasano. Coleman was on staff with current Head Coach Wayne Harris was a position coach as well as being on staff when Harris played for the Dinos. Rick was also instrumental in formation of the Dinos 5th Quarter. He was the position coach for many outstanding defensive linemen in the history of the program including Scott MacArthur, Kent Warnock, and Rob Prodanovic, who starred in the Canadian Football League. Other notable players Rick coached include Rene Deschamps, Jim Bailey, Rob Furlan, Al Wood, Chris Konrad, and Dan Federkeil to name a few. Rick was a starter on the 1975 Dinos team lost in the Vanier Cup to the University of Ottawa, the school’s first appearance in the National Championship game. He was a member of coach Connellan’s coaching staff for the 1983, 1985, and 1988 National Championship teams. Rick, along with his wife, Jan received the Connellan Team Award by the 5th Quarter for their support of the football team in 2007. Coleman graduated with Fine Arts and Education degrees from the U of C.

McNab was a member of the Dinos football team from 1984 through 1987 including the 1985 Vanier Cup Championship team. McNab graduated from the University of Calgary with BPE and BEd degrees. He has coached the Cobras to 16 Alberta Provincial 3A titles. Current U of C players from his program are Xavier Vaillancourt and Ben Dobson as well as former receiver Eric Nusl. Long time former Dinos head football statistician for the Dinos and reporter Daryl Slade will also be inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame at the same time as McNab. Slade will receive the Bell Memorial Award that goes to a media individual who has supported amateur athletics. Few did it better than Daryl Slade. Slade served as lead statistician for 150 Dino football games spanning a period of 32 years (1981-2012). Daryl did stats for Head Coaches Lashuk, Connellan, Fasano, Blake Nill as well as current Head Coach Harris when he was a position coach. In addition, he covered the team when employed by the Calgary Herald for four years in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. Slade was recognized by the Dinos 5th Quarter with Connellan TEAM Award in 2010 along with fellow stat crew members Robert Eaman and the late Nate DiLeandro. These individuals under Daryl’s direction were the best statistical crew at the University level, so much so, they were recruited to do Canadian Football League games including Grey Cup games hosted by Calgary before computerized statistical programs existed.
Rick Coleman, Robbie McNab, and Daryl Slade three outstanding well deserving individuals that played vital roles in the football community in various capacities and levels.
